Flood Watch vs Flood Warning

The last year hit us with two major flooding events—both in June 2019 and February 2020. These incidents were devastating for many homes and businesses—most of whom were not prepared for either incident. While there’s no telling when the next event might occur, it’s important you understand the different alerts authorities will use: flood watch and flood warning.

Flood Watch

When local authorities see that conditions are right for a flood to occur, they will issue a flood watch alert. While a flood watch does not mean that flooding is actively occurring, it does mean that the potential is there. If a watch is issued, you and your family should be alert and start making preparations.

Flood Warning

A flood warning is issued when flooding is actively occurring or is imminent. When this alert is given, you should immediately take action and get to higher ground if you haven’t already. While both types of alerts indicate danger, a flood warning is the most pressing.
